§ ¶How not to use Remote Desktop
I finally got around to hacking Pivot to always display the (Read
More...) link, so it's time to celebrate by posting a short entry.
One of the best features that Microsoft added to Windows XP is Remote
Desktop, a.k.a. Terminal Services limited to one user. All you have to
do to use it is to enable Remote Desktop in Control Panel > System
and then use the Terminal Services Client (mstsc.exe) to connect. This
is a godsend on a laptop, where I have to occasionally connect back to
my desktop to get something. Since Terminal Services uses a GDI
mirroring driver, it is faster for non-multimedia apps than VNC, which
polls the screen. The downside is that you can't run 3D apps.
When you use Remote Desktop, make sure you never, ever create a loop.
One day I was connected to my desktop via my laptop, and then after
forgetting which computer I was working on, connected back to my laptop
within the remote session. Both computers promptly went black with
their keyboards locked and I had to hard reset one of the computers to
recover the other!

Ok here we go:
Right click on "my computer" and select properties, click the remote tab.
put a check in the "Allow users to conn..." box.
IF you just want it for the user account your logged in with at the time then we're done, if you want to add other accounts to it then click the "select remote users" button and add them.
Note that the accounts you want to use with this feature will have to have passwords on them, if you don't use passwords then then accounts will not be able to use this feature. I also think that XP pro only has this, I don't think the XP home one does. It will allow remote assistance through MSN Messanger but not full remote login. If you have a router or firewall you will need to forward port 3389 to that machine. Also if you have more than one machine behind the router you can set up remote desktop on all of them by changing the port that RDC uses on each machine. In reg edit its under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlTerminal ServerWinStationsRDP-Tcp and change the port number for each one. So the 1st box has the default 3389, next one has 3390, 3391, ect. Also forward those ports to each of the machines in the router/firewall.
To connect to one of your machines, go to Start>all programs>acessories>communications>Remote desktop connection. In the box you will put the IP to that machine. If the IP is 192.168.1.10 and you left it at the default then you just connect. If you did the port renumbering you will put 192.168.1.10:3390, or 192.168.1.20:3391, ect. If your doing this over the internet to your home and you have a router, your would put in your home IP address and the port number for the machine. So if box1 is default, box2 is 3390, and box3 is 3391. To connect to Box1 we would just put in (yourip) no port because 3389 is the default, box2 (yourip):3390, box3 (youip):3391, ect. What I do since I have a DSL connection that sometimes changes is use no-ip.com's free dynamic ip service. So I have myname.no-ip.com pointing to my house all the time. so to connect to my deasktop I would put myname.no-ip.com, for my server I put myname.no-ip.com:3390, and for the office pc I put myname.no-ip.com:3391 and thats that. Hope it made sence and I didn't dumb it down too much or make it too confussing.

the regedit path to change the port numbers didn't output right in my post, it should read:

You don't have to hard reboot them...
just unplug the network cable of the laptop and wait for 5 minutes

That explanation was completely confusing! everything is cas sensative when it comes to computing. It your going to put qoutaions and periods in your explanations how is anyone going to know what to type correctly? You need to re-expalin it again with proper syntax. You had me for a few moments then it was completely confusing?
